The Islamic Centre of England (ICEL) was established in 1998 as a religious and cultural centre. Its work spans spiritual and ethical guidance, education, social and cultural activities, outreach and dialogue.

Public records describe ICEL as a Shia Ithna Ashari Muslim charity. The Centre's stated aims include serving the community while helping people of different faiths and cultures engage with authentic Islamic knowledge.

The story of Islamic Centre of England

Faith within a remarkable London landmark.

The present building has a history that predates the Centre itself. London Museum records that it opened in 1912 as the Maida Vale Picture House and later served as a dance hall, casino and bingo hall.

1912

Maida Vale Picture House opens.

1997

The Islamic Centre acquires the building, with adaptations intended to protect its historic interior.

1998

ICEL is established as a religious and cultural centre.
